We will discuss your pet's condition and decide whether to book an appointment, triage them by phone or refer you to one of the emergency veterinary clinics listed on this page for more immediate care.

Steps to Take In A Pet Emergency

Follow these steps if you are experiencing a veterinary emergency: 

  • Call Ahead If Possible - Call one of the emergency animal hospitals listed above to let them know you are on your way. 
  • Follow Instructions Provided - When you call the emergency pet hospital to let them know you are on your way, staff may provide instructions to help you apply first aid or otherwise help comfort your pet. Follow these instructions carefully. 
  • Remain Calm - Stay calm and be extra careful around your pet. Animals in pain often react negatively toward anyone trying to help and may bite or scratch.
  • Bring Your Pet In For Care - Do not put yourself at risk! Safely bring your pet to one of the emergency vet locations above.

  • Do I need to call ahead?

    Advanced Care Animal Clinic is not an emergency veterinary hospital. As such, we request that you call ahead to ensure that we can treat your pet. In some cases, we may be able to triage over the phone, or alternatively we may refer you to an emergency clinic that is better suited to address your pet's needs.

    Walk-ins are not accepted!

    If your pet requires immediate life-saving care, please call one of the emergency animal hospitals listed above to request further instructions and let them know you are on your way. 

  • When is your clinic open?

    In addition to regularly scheduled appointments, our vets may be able to accommodate certain urgent care cases, depending on the situation. Give us a call during our regular business hours:

  • What is the difference between urgent and emergency care?

    Urgent veterinary care is for conditions that are serious but not immediately life-threatening to your pet.

    Emergency veterinary care, on the other hand, is for conditions that need immediate treatment in order to save your pet's life. For emergencies, contact the animal hospitals listed above.

  • What situations require emergency veterinary care?

    These situations are examples of emergencies that require immediate care:

    • Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
    • Injuries to the eye(s)
    • Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
    • Fractured bones or severe lameness
    • Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
    • Bleeding from nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
    • Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
    • Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
    • Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
    • Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc.)
    • Heat stress or heatstroke
    • Seizures and/or staggering
    • Unconsciousness
  • How long will we have to wait to see the vet?

    In Smokey Point, emergency animal care is similar to any human doctor's office—it can be unpredictable, and you may have to wait. 

    We recommend contacting the emergency animal hospital ahead of your arrival to confirm availability.

  • What types of animals do you treat?

    Our veterinarians are mostly experienced with cats and dogs.

  • Do you offer urgent care or sick care on a same-day basis?

    Yes! We offer same-day access appointments for sick pets whenever possible.

    If your pet is feeling unwell, contact us as early as you can so our team can assess the situation and arrange the earliest available appointment. If your pet is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, we recommend seeking immediate care at the nearest emergency veterinary hospital.

  • Do you offer overnight care?

    While we can provide medical care during our regular business hours, we do not offer overnight care. If your pet needs ongoing care after hours, we'll refer you to a 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital that can provide continuous treatment.

  • Do you accept walk-ins?

    No. We do not accept walk-in appointments. Please call us in advance so our team can schedule a convenient appointment and ensure your pet gets the care they need.
