Lead Veterinary Assistant

Title: Lead Veterinary Assistant

Location: Advanced Care Animal Clinic

Reports to: Hospital Manager

Department: Hospital Operations

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

 

Position Overview: 

A team member who performs the duties of both medical technical staff (e.g., technicians and assistants) and the staff of the assigned department. This role expedites the care and efficiency of the department and ensures high patient care standards. The Veterinary Assistant Lead must lead by example — demonstrating organizational skills, adherence to company policies, and maintaining a professional attitude.

Essential Functions:

  • Train new staff in their responsibilities; mentor staff regarding performance and training needs
  • Perform the duties of assistant, as scheduled.
  • Liaison with other departments and supervisors regarding patient care and hospital operations; resolve issues, as needed.
  • Serves as the point person for other staff members for questions, clarifications or Client
  • Implementing and maintaining SOPs (fluids, RTS drug protocol, proactive renewal protocols, referral list, how-to instructions, lab check off, etc.)
  • Provides guidance, mentorship to students, and on the floor training to new staff or other team members
  • Oversee cleaning, stocking, and inventory duties for the department.
  • Exhibit confidentiality and professionalism in all regards for employee issues; be proactive in approach to issue resolution.
  • Oversees daily appointment scheduling conflicts or urgent cases that arise mid shift
  • Monthly maintenance list to ensure all machines are cleaned, calibrated and kept to the best standard to ensure the longevity of the item
  • Keep hospital management informed of any issues or risks that might impact operations or employee relations; work with management team to resolve.
  • Hospital policies and procedures, including contents of Employee Handbook
  • Clinical laboratory procedures
  • Medication calculations and administration as allowed by the applicable state law
  • Venipuncture
  • Catheter placement as allowed by the applicable state law
  • Animal restraint
  • Vital sign monitoring as allowed by the applicable state law
  • Client communications
  • Radiographic technique and anesthesiology as allowed by the applicable state law
  • Patient physical assessments
  • Veterinary environment, terminology, and protocols
  • Performs other duties as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • High level of competence across the full range of veterinary skills.

  • Supervisory skills, including performance management, feedback, and communication.
  • Staff scheduling experience.
  • Professionalism and the ability to handle confidential information appropriately.

Schedule:

  • Tuesday to Friday

Pay Range
$24$26 USD
